Featuring dazzling color vistas by renowned photographer Galen Rowell, California the Beautiful is both a portrait of the state’s diverse natural beauty and, through the incredible voices of its writers, a testament to the ever-renewing spirit that it has come to embody. With one hundred state parks in California closing this fall as a result of state budgetary cuts, this book serves as call to action to preserve these beautiful spaces. This enlarged edition features a preface by Dan Jacobson of Environment California, a statewide advocacy group working to protect and preserve California’s open spaces.
Peter Beren has authored and edited numerous books, including The Writer’s Companion, Vintage San Francisco, and Hidden Napa Valley. He is former publisher of the Sierra Club. Dan Jacobson is the Legislative Director of Environment California, an advocacy organization dedicated to protecting and preserving California’s wilderness areas. Galen Rowell (1940-2002) photographed all over the world and is renowned for
his staggering archive of nature and outdoor photography. An accomplished mountaineer, he could obtain camera angles that other photographers could not reach. Rowell’s fine prints have been exhibited at The Smithsonian Institution, NY’s International Center of Photography and Nikon House, Chicago’s Field Museum and elsewhere internationally.
“Feed your soul in this grand little book where Galen Rowell’s classic images capture more beauty than you can imagine: sunrise in the Anza-Borrego Desert, alpenglow on the White Mountains in the Eastern Sierra, sunset over Mt. Shasta, Yosemite Falls by moonlight, and fields of poppies in Owens Valley, like orange paint poured on green hills. California the Beautiful is a stunning tapestry of nature¹s light and color in its mountains, meadows and seashore...” -- from the preface by Dan Jacobson, Environment California
